Welcome to Scarborough Rotary Club!
May, 2010
If you have been invited to consider joining Rotary, you can be sure it was not random. Your Rotarian friend has given you a very real compliment, and surely holds you in high regard as a leader in our community.
Rotary seeks out leaders in business and community for membership. Their skills and talents and experiences are needed, not just to raise money for worthwhile needs, which is important too, but to participate in decision making and planning to leverage the incredible global and local resources that gather in the company of the world’s nicest and most honorable citizens to foster the ideal of Service Above Self. That’s what they do; that is why we seek them out.
Rotary clubs strive to recruit the best in the community- the top lawyer, the best doctor, the smartest accountant and so forth. Each member represents his or her vocation or calling, which we call a “classification”. All ethical service is considered worthy, and Rotary’s one million and more members represent every classification imaginable.
But we cannot recruit a firecracker and then let them sit unutilized in a corner. Membership is not just more people. The best Rotarians are people who will enjoy the community of the club, someone who wants to work side-by-side on worthy local and international projects, roll up their sleeves and matter.
Membership involves fun, if they just wanted more work they could have stayed in the office. People join a club because they believe it is going to be an enjoyable experience, and it should be.
Membership should involve family. The club should not be in competition for an individual’s time. If spouses, children and grandchildren feel comfortable with the club and participate, it becomes part of the fabric of the family life, and another way of conveying Rotary values to a future generation of community leaders.
But most of all, membership in Rotary means making a difference in the world and the community. There are too many less fortunate people across the world and here at home, there is too much conflict, and too little understanding.
So I invite you to take a look at the benefits of joining Rotary. Talk it over with you family. Consider the impact on your business or your job. And if you’d like to find out more, give us a call at 207 883 0040 or drop an email to info@scarboroughrotary.org
Yours in Rotary Service
