John Raby
Peace Action Maine

John Raby has lived in Scarborough since he moved here in October 2022. He has been concerned with nuclear arms race and war/peace issues ever since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when he was a freshman at Stanford. After spending his working life as a high school history teacher in New Jersey, he moved to New London, New Hampshire in 2012 and was active with New Hampshire Peace Action from 2014 to 2022, when personal business required his move to Maine. While in New London, he wrote biweekly columns about war/peace, social justice, and environmental issues for the area’s local newspaper, and wrote New London’s clean energy policy, which passed into law at town meeting in 2018. He also authored two other local resolutions, one calling for an overturn of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision and the other calling for a program of nuclear arms control and disarmament, which passed at New London’s town meetings in 2014 and 2017. He currently a board member of Peace Action Maine and a member of Maine’s chapter of the Let Cuba Live organization.
