A Maine kayaker will stop in Scarborough during a 2500 mile paddle from Yarmouth, Maine to Guatemala. Her journey is to raise awareness and funds for Safe Passage, a Maine-based nonprofit that sets up schools in Guatemala City.

Deborah Walters, a member of the Rotary Club of Unity, "...smelled the methane and the rotting garbage and the choking dust blowing around, the vultures circling overhead,” she said of her first trip to the garbage dump community. “I saw the parents that are actually scavenging the dump for food, clothing, items they can recycle to sell.”

Her story is the subject of a June 26th article in the Portland Press Herald (click the link below). She will be the guest speaker at the Scarborough Rotary meeting on July 12th.
