May 5th – 50th Anniversary Celebration

It was a memorable evening as over 90 Rotarians, spouses, and guests gathered at the Dunstan School Restaurant to celebrate and recognize 50 years of service. With Governor Ann Lee Hussey at his side, President Rick rang the bell shortly after 6 PM. Vice President Leroy gave the invocation followed by Secretary Phil who introduced our many visitors including PDG and RID Dan Lilly. Phil noted that Dan hired him right out of law school which began a dialog that continued when Dan later had an opportunity to speak!

The gathering was presented an opportunity to sing thanks to song leader, Russ Burleigh and Peggy Wescott on the electronic piano. (Both past presidents of Portland Rotary). We sang  “We Go for Scarborough’, “Rotary, My Rotary”, and the National Anthem. However, our Friendship Exchange Team had to sing “Jana Gana Mana” their national anthem due to a technology glich.

The evening was a perfect occasion for DG Ann Lee and President Rick to induct Christina & Jared into our club and the larger world of Rotary.

Charter member and past president, Irving Senne along with past president , Stephen Burton provided us a glimpse of the early years of our club. Burton is still active in the Damariscotta-Newcastle club 50 years later.

DG Ann Lee was the featured speaker.  As a polio survivor, her personal experience from childhood through adulthood is gripping. She noted that Polio’s side effects will likely reappear in her later years.
