Scarborough Rotary has been asked to help neighbor Rotary Club of Saco Bay organize an awareness builder/fundraiser for Rotary Foundation's many initiatives that foster world peace and understanding.

On the weekend of October 6th- 8th, people form around the world will walk, each in their own neighborhoods. Ours will be on the Eastern Trail from Thornton Academy in Saco to Black Point Road in Scarborough.

More details to follow, but anyone intersted in working on the project should let Mindy know.

Old Orchard Beach, Maine U.S.A. – The saying goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” who has not heard this phrase before and understood the meaning that the most difficult tasks can only be accomplished one step at the time. With the help of each other and long-term dedication that is the approach behind Rotary District 7780’s sponsored “100 Kilometers Walk For Peace”.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 6 through Monday, October 8 between Thornton Academy, Saco, and Black Point Road, Scarborough, Maine. Many people share the same concern about the present world and will join Rotarians to make our societies more caring and fair-minded. As a result humanitarians are anticipated to walk recently completed sections of the Eastern Trail to raise awareness of the many vital local and global projects the Rotary Foundation supports. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to support those fundamental programs   in the six areas:

- Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
- Disease prevention and treatment
- Water and sanitation
- Maternal and child health
- Basic education and literacy
- Economic and community development

“ … peace means different things to different people.” Rotary International President, Sakuji Tanaka, recently reminded the 1.2 million Rotarians at the annual Rotary International Conference in Bangkok, Thailand this year. RI President Tanaka further stated “No definition is right and no definition is wrong. However we use the word, this is what peace means for us. No matter how we use or understand the word peace, Rotary can help us to achieve it.””

Inspired by these words of reflection and inspiration, event co-coordinator, Dru Laduke from the Rotary Club     of Saco Bay, crafted the idea of having 300 “Ambassadors” walk the talk. Participants will speak to 100 different people about this year’s Rotary theme “Peace through Service”, local or global project sponsored by local Rotary clubs. Each Ambassador will raise single dollar donations. “It’s about participation on so many levels.” states Laduke; “Everyone can give up a minute of their day to hear about incredible occurrence in their community. Who cannot give up one dollar to help us reach our goal of $30,000? One person at a time can make a difference in another person’s life or one dollar at a time can go a long way.”

Ambassadors will walk a portion of the “Walk For Peace” while others from countries like Brazil, Germany, France, Belgium and Chile will be symbolically walking with us to illustrate global fellowship.

Each of three days, the walk start on the Eastern Trail starting at Thornton Academy in Saco and go to approximately the Black Point Road and back again to the Saco location. Three days at approximately 33 kilometers each (or 20.75 miles) and participants will walk a total of 100 kilometers for Peace.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. If you would like to learn more about how to become a sponsor or become one of the 300 Ambassadors go to www.rotarywalkforpeace.com for more details.
