January 6th Meeting

Ember Earle welcomed us to the cozy conference room of the C Port Credit Union Scarborough branch at 313 US Route 1. Jared Avery introduced tonight’s speaker David E. Creech, principal of Scarborough High School.

David has been the principal since July 2013. Before coming to Scarborough, he was Assistant Principal of Kennebunk High School in Kennebunk where he was Mathematics Department Head for 11 years.  Prior to Kennebunk High School, he was a mathematic s teacher in Sanford for 14 years.

When he began at SHS he made a point of talking to all stake holders asking: 1. What SHS does well? 2. What are the challenges / needs? 3. What do they need from him?  Some of the responses asked for strong & consistent leadership, good communications, and strong & active community involvement.

David has worked at building the culture & relationships. His goal was to make things consistent and transparent as possible. Faculty finally sees that they are empowered and listen to. “Good teachers examine their processes each day”. He gave an example of a teacher who had previously kept her door closed and “head-down” while dreading coming to work. This individual now looks forward to coming to school.

In addition he has started a 3 edition per year newsletter, RED STORM NEWS.

His goal tonight was to find ways to improve student interaction particularly as it pertains to real life experience/opportunities. He cited an example how a local Kennebunk bank facilitated a 2 – 3 week course of personal finance that was every well received. Another example was a female student who wanted a career as an accountant until she participated in job shadowing. She now has absolutely NO INTEREST!

He is looking for a pilot service learning project.  SHS has good students and staff wanting to connect with the community.
