Student of the Quarter Honored

“Felicia is a remarkable young woman who is a stellar role model for her peers,” remarked Lead Teacher Kris White, speaking at the presentation ceremony Tuesday. “Every adult that works with Felicia is impressed with her maturity and willingness to help out.”  Felicia has been an integral part of Student Council for three years and has helped organize food drives and school fundraisers that have aided community members and fellow schoolmates alike. “This is her third year as the classroom representative, showing that her peers trust her voice to represent them.” 

Mrs. Mokriski, the faculty advisor of student council, says of Felicia that she, “Always takes the initiative on new projects.  She’s always first to volunteer when work needs to be done.  And of course she is responsible and a positive role model to the younger representatives on the council.”  Other activities that Felicia enjoys are soccer and softball.  Felicia has a positive outlook that really worked well on the All-Stars team.  “The younger players looked up to her and listened to her advice about playing.”  Said Ms. White. “Her band teacher, Mrs. Boivert says “She always enters the room with enthusiasm. She is a great role model, and I am glad I have had the pleasure of her participation”.

Middle School Teacher Christine Goulet also spoke. She had Felicia as a 6th, 7th and now 8th grade student and her affection for Felicia was apparent. “As Felicia’s sixth grade teacher and the Middle School’s yearbook advisor I knew Felicia would be an excellent addition to the yearbook staff within the first two weeks of meeting her. So I “encouraged” her to join the staff. There are certain qualities that all yearbook staff members must have. They must be organized, outgoing, mature, personable, thick skin, but most importantly have a sense of humor. Felicia has all these qualities and more. She has been my go-to person to get jobs done, my right hand gal, to sort of speak. Felicia assumed this role for her great way of letting peers know they need to “pull their weight” or “meet their deadline.” Felicia is now ending her eighth grade year as one of the yearbook editors, and I honestly don’t know how I will survive without her.”  

“All of the teachers on Passamaquoddy will be very sad to send Felicia on to the high school; however, we are all cheered by the certainty of the great accomplishments that she will achieve, there and beyond.” Concluded Ms. White. Felicia was selected by the Passamaquoddy Team. 

At that point Rotary president Candy Macomber observed  how invaluable it is for kids to have such dedicated support from teachers and  parents and thanked them. The audience responded with a standing ovation. Felicia’s parents, Scott and Joanne, her grandparents and twin brother Jake were in attendance, along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Entwistle and Middle School Assistant Principal David Currier.  Dr. Entwistle was guest speaker and talked about the importance of school-community connection.

Anna Chase, who was selected by the Penobscot Team, could not attend the presentation Tuesday. She won the middle school spelling bee and was competing in the state bee the same evening. She will receive her award at the June presentation.

Each quarter the Scarborough Rotary Club honors one student from the Middle School and one student from the High School with the Student of Quarter award to recognize and reward students who continually display citizenship, ethics, honor and kindness.  Students are selected by teachers, school administrators, guidance counselors or coaches”, explained Macomber.  “They must be in good academic standing, of course, but also have participated in volunteerism, citizenship or service learning opportunities”. 

Rotary is an organization of business and civic leaders that promotes high ethical standards and fosters world peace and understanding. Its service projects address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence prevention.  The Student of the Quarter Award is a natural fit for us, said Macomber, and we love to do it. It’s good to hear about the wonderful things these kids are doing.”

Also recognized were officers of  the Scarborough High School Interact Club. The Interact Club is a service organization run by high school students. Rotary earmarked $100 to support Interact’s upcoming community service projects in honor of their service.
