March 4th Meeting

Mike introduced  Texas native, Thatcher Freund an author, journalist, experienced editor with a deep interest in history.

From his web site  http://www.thatcherfreund.com/  : “ He was born in 1955 in Austin, Texas. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University in 1978 and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1984.” Presently, he is living in Portland. The father of a high school sophomore he is looking forward to chaperoning her science project team on an upcoming California trip.

His presentation focused on the importance of telling stories. He mentioned how his talk had been evolving over the last 2 months. He is looking for stories and the ideas that lie within the stories, which give them meaning . These are events that have shaped our lives and  require systematic reflection to uncover.

He pointed to a plastic Pepsi cup and how its history could be expanded to produce stories of human interest. However every memory is not necessarily profound. Even the Dali Lama cannot remember every second of his life!

Presently he is working with two elderly ladies in Philadelphia. The entire process will take over a year and one half.  His California chaperoning duties no doubt will provide future personal  story material!
